DeepCool Maelstrom 240 - cooling like a whirlpool

We test and review the DeepCool Maelstrom 240, a 240mm Liquid cooler that is performing really good in a saturated LCS kit market. Yeah so , DeepCool has released the Maelstrom 240 AIO liquid cooling kit under tgheor Gamer Strom branding.  In today's review we'll be examining the Maelstrom240; armed with two 120mm fans and a 240mm radiator it is one of the more affordable 240MM products we have tested to date.

Maelstrom - noun

  1. a large powerful whirlpool

  2. any turbulent confusion

A large and powerful whirpool sounds best. Maelstrom 240 is a self-contained (AIO) CPU cooling unit based on liquid cooling. It does not require much setup installation. With a pump and radiator ship pressure tested, pre-filled, and sealed directly from the factory to provide maintenance-free operation for years. This ease of use extends to its support of the latest Intel and AMD sockets; including the latest Intel LGA 1155/1156/2011 and AMD FM2 sockets. The Maelstrom series is equipped with 0.2 mm high-density water micro channel and cooper block to offer an efficient thermal conduct along with 120 mm X 27 mm Aluminum fin to maximize its cooling performance. Fan replacement is available with the standard built-in mounting holes. However, as stated the market is fierce and competitive, will the Maelstrom 240 be able to offer enough cooling performance ?

Well, let's find out, but have a look at what's tested today first.

Specifications

The Maelstrom is DeepCool's latest addition to its compact watercooling kit line that aims to bring watercooling to the masses. It fits in many cases that support 2 x 120mm fan radiators, is compatible with pretty much any available Intel and AMD platform whilst being as easy to install as say a traditional heatsink. It comes factory filled, sealed and tested with a two year zero maintenance guarantee. The kit comes with two 120mm PWM fans that have a fairly wide RPM range, Seidon can operate silently or unleash more power as desired. The water pump helps dissipate heat effectively and maintain temperatures through stable water circulation. The Micro channels on the waterblock enlarge the contact surface between cold plate and coolant for more heat transfer.

DeepCool will offer the Maelstrom 120k, Maelstrom 120 & Maelstrom 240.

Higher Basic Configuration & Better Cooling Performance
All the Maelstrom series are equipped with 0.2 mm high-density water micro channel and cooper block to offer a highly efficient thermal conduct along with 120 mm X 27 mm Aluminum fin to maximize their cooling performance. Fan replacement is available with the standard built-in mounting holes.

Innovative adoption of unique pump with closed impeller which offers bigger power and de-vibration. Long lifetime zirconia ceramic bearing is made to ensure 120,000 safe running hours. Meanwhile, all the maelstrom series are compatible with all sockets of Intel and AMD processor. Strong FEP tubing owned anti-bending, flat crush resistance are attached for easier and more stable installation. Bionic LED breathing light design of Maelstrom offers amazing visual presentation while operating.

As always we start with the packaging -- well, everything is packaged, cushioned and bundled safely in the box. Let's rip that packaging open.

Once opened up you'll spot the liquid cooling unit consisting of the radiator, fan, tubing, pump/cooling block. Mostly pre-fitted and ready to use of course. Everything is carefully packaged and individually wrapped in plastic.

You'll spot a backplate that supports a wide variety of CPU sockets; Intel LGA 2011 / 1366 / 1156 / 1155 / 1150 / 775 and AMD Socket FM2 / FM1 / AM3+ / AM3 / AM2+ / AM2 based processors can be used in combination with this cooler. That's extensive socket support alright.

Included are:

  • Liquid CPU Cooler

  • Mounting kit for all modern CPU sockets

  • Two High Performance Fans

  • Fan and radiator mounting screws

  • Thermal compound prepped to copper base

  • Quick Start Guide

  • PWM Fan HUB

So summed up, once unboxed you'll spot the cooling unit consisting of the radiator assembly, fans and brackets + backplate that supports a very wide range of AMD and Intel processors.  We do have some work cut out for us as we need to mount the fans and cooling block retention clips.

Here we have the Maelstrom base unit, we'll need to mount the two variable PWM fans (each 120mm), with the pump and radiator assembled in one single unit. Both fans are pre-wired on one connector and are controlled from a RPM/PWM controller on your motherboard.
